History

Jacobite Syrian Christian Churches in India is an integral part of the Universal Syrian Orthodox Church under the Holy Apostolic See of Antioch and all the East under the spiritual leadership of its supreme head, His Holiness The Patriarch. St. Thomas Jacobite Syrian Church Congregation, Mumbai is also functioning under the said Universal Church.

  • 1952

    The Jacobite Syrian Christian Church, Bombay was formed. The first Holy Qurbana was conducted at St. Peter’s church, Mazgaon by H.G. Elias Mor Julios Metropolitan, the then delegate in India of His Holiness Patriarch of Antioch and all the East. Subsequently the services were shifted to The Holy Cross Church, Ummerkhadi, Byculla.

    St. Thomas Jacobite Syrian Orthodox Church Congregation, Bombay was formed under the leadership of Ver. Rev. Jacob Kurieckal Corepiscopa and late Mr. M.J. Kurrien.

  • 8 June,1975

    The Congregation was formally inaugurated and blessed by H.G. Thomas Mor Dionysius Metropolitan (Present Catholicose) by offering the Holy Qurbana at Holy Cross Church, Ummerkhadi, Byculla. The Congregation assumed a legal locus by getting registered under the Bombay Public Trust Act, 1950 and the Societies Registration Act, 1960.

    H.B. Mór Baselios Paulose-II visited and blessed our Congregation soon after his consecration as Catholicose of the East in 1975.

  • Feb-1982April-2000

    His Holiness Moran Mor Ignatius Zakka Iwas- I,Patriarch of Antioch and all the East blessed our Congregation during his Apostolic visits to India.

  • 11 Nov,1990

    The foundation stone of St. Thomas Jacobite Syrian Orthodox Church, Nerul, Navi Mumbai was laid by H.G. Geevarghese Mor Greegorious (Perumpilly Thirumeni).

  • 26 March,1995

    The temporary Consecration of the Church was solemnized by H.G. Thomas Mor Thimothios, Diocesan Metropolitan.

  • 12April,1997

    The Cross Crib at the Church premises was consecrated H.G. Thomas Mor Thimothios, Diocesan Metropolitan

  • 27,28Feb,1999

    The Holy Mooron Koodasha of the Church was solemnized jointly by H.G. Thomas Mor Dionysius, Metropolitan of Angamaly Diocese (Present Catholicos) and H.G. Thomas Mor Thimothios, Diocesan Metropolitan.

    St. Ignatius Pre-Primary School was inaugurated at the Church premises.

    The Holy Relics of Manjinikkara Bava was interred in the Church.

  • 26Oct,2000

    The Holy Relics of Manjinikkara Bava was enshrined in a tomb adjacent to the Madbaha by H.G. Thomas Mor Thimothios, Diocesan Metropolitan.

    The Kalkurissu (Stone Cross) in the church premises was consecrated by H.B. Baselios Thomas-I Catholicose.The Beskudisho at Three Thronoses in Madbaha was consecrated by H.B. Baselios Thomas-I Catholicose.

    The extended and renovated Church was re-dedicated by H.B. Baselios Thomas-I Catholicose, H.G. Thomas Mor Thimothios & H.G. Kuriakose Mor Eusebius Metropolitans.

    Golden Flagpost (Swarna Kodimaram) in the Church premises was consecrated by H.G. Kuriakose Mor Eusebius, Diocesan Metropolitan

    Renovated Cross Crib in the Church premises was consecrated by H.B. Baselios Thomas-I Catholicose, Their Graces Kuriakose Mor Eusebius, Diocesan Metropolitan and Elias Mor Julious , Asst Metropolitan of Angamali Diocese.

    The valedictory meeting of the Diamond Jubilee of St. Thomas Jacobite Syrian Church Congregation was held at the church premises at which, apart from H.B. Catholicose and their Graces Metropolitans, Shri Ganesh Naik, Hon Minister of Govt. of Maharashtra was also present.

    The Tomb of Manjinikkara Bava was renovated and re-dedicated & The Holy Relics were re-interred by H.E. Michael Mor Chrysostomos, Metropolitan Archbishop of Institutions and Monasteries in Lebanon and H.G. Thomas Mor Alexandrios , Diocesan Metropolitan.

    The road in front of the Church was named as “St. Thomas Jacobite Syrian Orthodox Church Road.”

  • Apart from the Nerul Church, the Holy Services are currently offered at The Holy Cross Church, Byculla & St. Basil Service Centre, Anushakti Nagar.
  • The Dukhrono of St. Ignatius Elias-III (Manjinikkara Bava) is celebrated as the main Perunnal of Nerul Church in February every year.
  • The main Perunnal of the Congregation is celebrated at Byculla Church on August 14th & 15th every year to commemorate the heavenly abode of St. Mary.
  • The Dukhrono of Yeldo Mor Baselios Bava (Kothamangalam Bava) is celebrated as the main Perunnal at St. Basil Service Centre, Anushakti Nagar on October 1st & 2nd every year.
